Summer Solstice Time

 Summer Solstice Time

We have now reached the summer solstice and it is actually in our rear view mirror...time to run a few trains in outdoor seasonal conditions!

These images and videos were taken on Saturday, in the spring time and they are shared with you today, Tuesday, in the summer time.

We catch up with Doug and his sweeper car.

They have cleaned out the winter leftovers along the line as they cross the Brennan Bridge.

A crewman looks out the rear of the van to monitor the quality of the clean!

Video footage of this last segment.

Of course, the brushes are not working as yet.

Doug tells us he will be able to purchase a replacement set locally.

The Fred Mills Trestle gets a brushing!

Does it tickle, Father Fred?  Remember to click on the white arrow a second time to watch the video.

Not only does Doug's run tell us about debris that requires cleaning between the railheads...

...his run over the rails reveals trimming required above the rail cars and locomotive.

Doug's Number 7 is a true beauty!

The conductor in the cupola gets a close shave!

Let's check it out in this rare video footage, shall we!

Doug has navigated through Glen Hammond.

He takes the big curve to the west of town.

On approach to Bellamy.

It's fun being a rail videographer!

On arrival in Peter's Pond.

This is the location where a recent birthday event began!

A nice "going away" shot as Doug's train approaches the rock cut at Hayes Falls.

A video treat.

Earlier in the day we were in Craig Leigh.

As we railfanned Pat's train.

His cars are on the ready track beside the engine house as he backs onto his consist.

Let's check the video of this move.

On the pin and ready to go!

Departure time.

His train crawls through the throat of the wye as he exits Craig Leigh.

Some nice video of the movements.

Pat is through Mount St. Helens.

She's quite the hauler.

Slowing down on approach to Ironwood.

Train Extra 0000 makes its way westward in this video footage.  (Big grin!  Pat still has to number and letter his locomotive.  Can't wait to learn of the mystery lettering!)

Rounding the bend into Spruce.

Lots of tanker traffic on this day.

Love the old styled gon.

Some more video footage of Pat's train!

Finding the dappled shade on the western portion of Spruce.

Rounding the big bend.

Accelerating through the curve.

On the downhill grade already!

Video of this railfan pass on the big curve.

Pat's train approaches the big trestle on a slow order restriction.

Pat monitors the progress of his train.

Setting the turnout for Nelson Yard.

And his train follows suit.

Video of the train's progress between Lilly and Nelson Yard.

We catch up with Paul in care of the passenger train.

He's followed the slope down from Craig Leigh...

...and has arrived the depot at Mount St. Helens.

Those lovely passenger cars sure do brighten up our day.

Let's check out the video footage!

Paul's Rio Grande Southern unit is earning its keep...

...hauling passengers and lading...

...along the route of the IPP&W/RP&M rails.

Let's check it out on video!
That's all for videos today.  More will come later in the week showcasing Paul's passenger service.

A little orphan found on the table.

Doug en route at Northland.

A low angle view.

Doug, again, out on the line!

Looking good, for sure!

This puppy weathered the winter fairly well.

As did this little gem!

In the Glen.

Onward ho!

Lovely!

Through the green, green grass.

That needs mowing!  Thanks Bernie!

Pat keeps an eye on his train.

Following switching, he takes the lead into Nelson Yard.

Into the shade!

Safely through the overbrush!

Alone in Nelson Yard.

Lots of tracks and few trains.

Pat runs around his train to conduct some switching.

The Canada flag waves proudly on a lovely morning as Pat takes a short breather from the action.

Remember, our next installment will showcase the remainder of Paul's run with the passenger trains.

Pat says "Hi!"

As does Paul.

As always, we thank our skipper, Fred, for offering up his place for our enjoyment of train running!
All the best, Mike Hamer, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
