Promoting Our Large Scale Hobby at OVAR

Promoting Large Scale Train Operations at Our Local Ottawa Dinner Club Meeting

Hey folks, a number of our OVGRS family who are also OVAR members brought out their large scale diesel locomotives to last night's OVAR dinner meeting in an effort to promote our passion for large scale railroading and train operations.

Two eight-foot long tables were set out for the 20 engines which covered some 11 roads and 15 differing styles of locomotive.

OVAR stands for "Ottawa Valley Associated Railroaders" and we meet every second Tuesday of the month from September through to June.  Typically some 90 members of the 120 collective show up for our dinner meetings where camaraderie abounds.  The food at the Villa Marconi is exceptional.  Not only do we enjoy dinner and the display, we are always blessed with fine presentations representing all aspects of railroading and a wonderful staff to work with.

I would like to thank Chris for sending along these images!

Indeed, this is one very colourful line-up of motorized equipment!  Fred owns the IPP&W 45-Tonner and the black road switcher two engines over from it.  Mark Shumelda allowed me to bring out his White Pass & Yukon Alco MLW DL-535E #111 for the display which you see sandwiched between Fred's two offerings.

Some OVAR members asked if the engines ran on track power or battery.

That's a great question for someone who has never visited Fred's backyard.

Many OVAR members were impressed when I mentioned that all these engines have lithium ion batteries and they are powered remotely with a throttle similar to model aviators who fly their model aircraft using remote control devices.  The CN road switcher you see close up belongs to Neil Lowes and the Conrail GP30 #2236 was delivered to the table by Malcolm Vant.

These next two images were sent in by Pat Brennan.  Here we check out Sid's Great Northern S4 #6 and in behind we spot Ralph's Ontario Northland FA1 #1400.

All 20 are lined up in a row as Tom snaps some close-up images!

These next number of images come our way from Bernie's camera.  The blue topped Delaware & Hudson GP38-2 you see in the distance belongs to me as does the CN RS3 just beyond it.

There certainly was a wide array of diesel types on display.  The CP GP30 diesel sitting beside the bright red CP engine belongs to Paul Anderson.

There was also a wide array of colourful liveries!  Pat Brennan brought out the Erie Lackawanna centrecab and the CP road switcher.  The TH&B GP7 belongs to Bernie.

As the locomotives trickled in, members of OVAR began assembling at the tables to see the latest addition to the display.

Bernie tried to capture images without folks in them so as to make the diesels stand out to the best of their abilities!

Jim Davis custom painted and lettered his Ontario Northland GP9 #1603.  He also brought out the CP Rail red unit with the Pacman logo.

Magnificent!

Awe inspiring!

A view from the front.

A front view further down the table.  Note Doug Culham's Canadian Pacific FA-1 #2002 and FB-1 #2052 alongside the HO versions of the same engines!  Clever that!

Malcolm's Conrail unit is at the end for the time being as we await Neil's CN RS3.  The wet noodle CN Geep you spot down the line is our very own Chris's locomotive which he custom painted and added 3D printed details to along with his other CN endcab switcher just this side of it.  That's Pat Brewer's lovely NYC switcher in behind Chris's engine

Neil also promoted the OVGRS by wearing his shirt emblazoned with our logo!

Thanks Bernie for the remaining batch of photos from above.  To prove we just don't own large scale locomotives for display purposes, we actually have our wonderful railroad in Fred's backyard where we get to run them!

Chris sent me these two images from our work session the following morning after the OVAR dinner meeting.  The both of us are lumberjacks and we're okay!  Heh heh!

The link below (in white) takes you to OVAR's home page where you can read Part One of the two part article I wrote on the train operations of the OVGRS.

I simply re-worked the article that we had published a couple of years ago in the on-line Garden Railroading News magazine and changed up a few of the images for our OVAR friends.

Copy and paste the link below into your computer's browser and click on the purple link that indicates: Get the May issue of the Interchange here (PDF) and you will reach the article.

I will share more pictures from the meeting as they come my way!

Thanks to all our OVGRS friends who sent me the information via e-mail in order for me to make up the special information cards for each diesel...in order to have uniformity for the display.

All the best from the OVGRS!
