First Trains of August - Second Section

First Trains of August - Second Section

We hop back up in the saddle for a second look at the train fun from this past Saturday where a handful of lads gathered.
(Thanks for your lovely telephone message on the answering machine last night, Fred!)

Ironwood & New England mogul #27 readies itself for its day's run.  It first needs to be turned on the wye.

Bernie sets the turnouts leading onto the Northland ore dock.

We are safely on our train.

In the meantime, Paul starts his diesel.

His GP35 looks quite handsome in this paint scheme.

Passenger "Extra 27" gains clearance out from Craig Leigh.

This train is carrying a railfan group from out of town.

Immediately they find themselves in the dappled shade so evident around the area of Mount St. Helens.

The train slows for the patrons to snap photos...

...and to have many lasting memories of their trip...

...railfanning the Ironwood & Peter's Pond RR.

A new museum piece acquisition holds honours on the head end...

...a lovely baggage car...

...donated to the IPP&W in 2020.

The train is through Ironwood...

...and on into Spruce.

The crew aboard the locomotive marvel at the new trackwork found in Spruce.

They take the great curve to the west of town...

...and begin their descent...

...toward the lowest elevation along the line...

...through the canyon and out onto the pedestrian crossing.

Paul has stored up some much need shade...

...before beginning his run.

We find him on the outskirts of Ironwood.

He has a few maneuvers to complete here.

On this day he acts as train driver and conductor.

The large umbrella tree offers some relief from the sun...

...as Paul moves around his train in order to handle the facing sidings.

That GP35 is a real looker, Paul!

Through the crossing...

...and dwarfed by the Fallentree Mine complex...

...Paul is upgrade once again...

...somewhere near Lilly.

Ah...there he is!

Moments earlier...on the climb.

Canting into the curve...

...and out again...

...anticipating the big bridge.

In sight!

No slow order here...

...as the trestle was recently inspected.

Back in Ironwood we find Lawrence conducting some measurements...

...while Mark hauls a tanker train through town.

That handsome little tyke of an engine...

...is a great looking hauler.

Mark railfans his own train.

Mark tells us that this little gem...

...arrived his home...

...already Radio equipped!

A trains does not have to be long...

...to be a great looking train!

He ducks below my train...

...and finds daylight...

...beneath the eastern entrance...

...to Nelson Yard.

Our two trains...

...have drawn a crowd of onlookers!
Mark is training his young lad, Olie, to be a great engineer.

Bernie is handsome in whichever garb he chooses to wear!

Lawrence too...seen here in deep conversation with our fearless leader, Fred, who is out of sight.

Thanks for checking in on the "second section" of our train running antics from the first Saturday in August.  There's still more to come in the near future.
We are getting our fair share of rain on this Sunday and it is much required.  Thankfully we enjoyed sunnier times on the Saturday!
All the best, Mike Hamer, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
