Saturday August 15th Train Running

Train Running In Mid August

Trackside viewing in mid-August serves up a great dish of railfan delight.

For I spot Grant with his lovely Connie tackling the curve at Lilly.

While across the way a local wayfreight drifts down the hill at a well-known railfan spot commonly referred to as "The Ledges."

Train Extra #7 has been assembled in Ralph Yard...

...and takes the ladder...

...out from Firgrove.

The earlier spotted wayfreight glides below the large siloes at Bell...

...and past the specialized tower located in Stuart Yard...

...on an eastbound vector.

Extra 7 levels out...

...on approach to Bell...

...showcasing a lovely TH&B 40' boxcar.

Mark and Olie enjoy some friendly talk with...

...Uncle Fred.

While this fine looking specimen sits quietly in Spruce.

A fine example of a tail end car.

Hey...a second TH&B locomotive is found on the property...

...under the ownership of Mark & Olie...sans stanchions.

Doug is our masked marauder...

...in the cab of Train Extra #7.

A look back at Spruce...

...and then our TH&B crew departs town.

This rail car is a beauty!

It was at this time in the day where much activity was spotted in Ironwood...

...which was heavily covered in our earlier blog posting.

The approaching ascending grade does not put fear in the crew of this Canadian Pacific train...

...as it earlier watched the crew aboard #7 successfully summit the same grade.

Another local approaches Ironwood from the east...

...where the crew meets #7 and our other TH&B train.

Can you identify this handsome operator?  Why, it's Mr. Pat...

...with a good looking passenger train awaiting a meet in Mount St. Helens.

Number 7 arrives the Mount...

...where this ardent railfan captured the meet.

While railfan photographers are discouraged by the dappled shade in this location for photographic purposes...

...they do appreciate the cooler temperatures the foliage offers.

With Number 7 in the rear view mirror, our passenger train has a clear lane down to Ironwood.

Grant has decided to switch out a few industries at Spruce.

Looking good, there, Grant!

A lovely morning she be's!

Passenger train Pat slips down the grade out from Mount St. Helens.

Meanwhile Doug and Paul meet in Craig Leigh.

It's always a joy capturing some fine examples of rolling stock such as this D&H hopper...

...and this milk car...

...not to forget this great looking Southern Pacific 40' boxcar in black.

Say "Cheese" Paul!

Then it's a new run out from Craig Leigh.

We continue with Doug at Northland...

...and on into Douglas Yard...

...with good old Number 7.

Hey, it's Marcel!

A matching pair...

...creating a symbiotic relationship in yellow!

In our next installment, we will take it up from here and follow Marcel's train along with many others from this fine mid-August morning!

As for my family, today...Sunday, August 16th...my wife, Lisa, and I celebrate our 40th anniversary as well as Lisa's birthday!  Yes, I'm no dummy...I got married on Lisa's birthday so I don't have to remember two special dates...just one!  Hee Hee.  These are our daughters, Karen and Alison flanking Lisa.

I must say that I have as much fun creating these blog entries as I do running the trains on Saturday mornings or traveling with Lisa across Canada.  This image was taken on a ship traversing the length of the Port Alberni Sound on the western side of Vancouver Island.

I'll be sure to post more pics from this Saturday's train running experience over the next few days.

All the best, Mike Hamer, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

  1. Good job again Mike. I heard someone mention on Saturday that although he had not attended so far this year he felt like he had because of the blog entries. (Some masked man said that)LOL.
