WDWD Pics From the Maintenance Gang
Our typical handful of Workday Wednesday lads descended upon Fred's backyard this morning.
It was a real treat to meet Fred's brother, Ted and his lovely wife Mary, who dropped in for a visit.
The main goal of the team today was to sort out the 100 or so cars which will be in the wrong trays as we had to quickly pack up the rolling stock last Saturday when the rains came.
But first and foremost...congratulations to Pat for becoming a grandfather recently!
We see him with his first grandchild, his grandson Owen.
Pat tells us Owen was born with that very special railroading gene! 👍👍
Here we see Fred in conversation with Mary & Ted.
As just mentioned, our main goal of the morning was to re-sort the freight cars for this coming Saturday's train operating session.
This involved pulling all of the trays out from the sheds and resorting the equipment.
Most crews were well on their way to finishing their first trick trains last Saturday while at least one crew was then underway with their second run of the morning.
Here we see Chris checking over the master list for the various cars.
This task took us most of the morning to complete.
We decided to re-run the session this coming Saturday so we had to start over with the car locations.
We no longer had the paperwork from the session so Fred & I headed down into his basement to reprint all of the required sheets including the master list.
There is no need to print the list out again as we have all the yardmaster's lists and crew lists now safely placed in Fred`s manila envelope.
Pat managed to mow the lawns around the railroad and blow the debris off the track areas.
Fred carefully compiled all of the paperwork for Saturday and has stored it away for safekeeping.
Bernie investigates the trackwork at "Goodie's Gulch".
There's the handsome lad!
I was busy sorting cars from the various trays and moving them to other trays throughout the property.
Note the 10 sheets of paper which make up the master list have been brought to Rat Portage and spread out as we dealt with cars from the Firgrove cabinet.
How about some juggling Mike!
Later we took a wee break in the crew lounge...a well-deserved one nonetheless! 😀😁😀
Let's take a look for a short while at our recent session which was "called" due to rain after about 45 minutes of train running.
The crews are setting out the traffic in Glen Hammond and Nelson Yard.
WDWD member, Chris, warms up with a cup of coffee.
Doug and Claire are crewmates on the Rat Portage & Mattawa Railway on this day.
Here is our Nelson Yardmaster, Bill Scobie!
Love the airplane shirt there Bill!
Grant asked to run the big yard with Bill for this session.
Grant creatively made these car cards for classification purposes in the big yard.
They look great Grant!
They do the job perfectly!
Nice!

Changing the subject...if you are not an OVAR member, feel free to come on out as a guest of one of our OVGRS friends who are.
You will see amazing models such as this O Scale CP steam locomotive made from Weaver Models.
You'll see handsome characters like our very own Bernie who is snapping a picture of...
...one of the amazing models brought out for display, many of which have background information as seen above.
The variety of models is outstanding...
...as are the smiles on the modelers...like our friend Kyle.
You will see amazing custom painted jobs like this Windsor & Hantsport switcher painted and lettered by Charls Gendron...still under construction.
I've railfanned this great rairload while visiting in-laws in the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia.
You'll be entertained by such fun folks as my good friend John Soehner who is a brilliant railfan...and chef!
John's model of this CNR Suburban 4-6-4 #47.
You'll enjoy a fine meal and a great presentation with many fine friends including a number of our OVGRS brothers and sisters.
My table mate, George, kept us well entertained throughout the evening.
And...on the sawmill front, Doug, Rob & I are moving along in the build as we now focus on the log dump.
No, the black area is not a river...it will be standard earth where many logs will be located.
We still have to complete the derrick before we attach the oscillating engine and the twin-drum hoisting engine you see residing atop the black area.
Some greenery has brought the previous 'lunar landscape' alive somewhat.
With well over 1000 hours spent on this project, there are still quite a few to come!
Doug will be delivering a presentation next Wednesday to a group interested in local history.
He will be talking about the lumber and forest industry in Eastern Ontario circa 1910-20 at a church hall in Kars.
Rob and I will be bringing the diorama along as we will attend the presentation.
Feel free to chat with Doug about his talk this coming Saturday when you see him at Fred's.
Well, seeing as my arms are full...I better let you go!
I'll try to find time to create yet another blog entry from our truncated session last Saturday later in the week.
Thanks Fred for hosting us this morning.
It was great to have all of the cars for this coming Saturday's session well sorted out.
Ted & Mary...it was lovely meeting you once more.
Enjoy your stay in Ottawa!
Here's hoping the great weather we have been experiencing throughout the week will continue through to Saturday!
