Workday Wednesday July 9th

WDWD - July 9th

Today a handful of lads gathered holding true to our weekly maintenance schedule.

In this blog installment you will see the start of the painting of the dispatch booth.

You will also see the replacement of choke cables down in Peter's Pond so the cables do not run across the station platform.

The clock has just turned over from 7:59 to 8:00 AM and all is quiet on the home front.

The dock up in Cedar Rock had fallen over - most likely the workings of a squirrel so now it is upright again.

Fred had taken these cars into the RIP Track nearby his workbench inside the house for repairs and I have brought them back out on to the railroad.

"Ditto" for the Drover's Caboose.

Fred immediately got down to work on the choke cables near the depot in Peter's Pond.

He first has to remove the existing cables as the one running along the area where the depot is supposed to be actually ran across the station platform.

Hmmm...cherry cola!

Not exactly a drinkable liquid, right Doug?

Looking good Doug!

Great coverage!

WDWD regular Pat has arrived on the scene!

This 3/4 angled shot shows the first coat of paint on the east side of the dispatch booth as opposed to the 'yet to be done' north side.

Fred takes a well-deserved break from his tasks.

Bernie comes prepared to get down to work!

Chris conducts some much-needed weeding.

Pat certainly is a 'whipper snipper'!

Some of the tools of the trade!

Henk takes a breather in the shade of the crew lounge after heading out to the grocery store to purchase hamburgers for this Saturday's session.

Fred continues with the choke cable work.

Earlier in the week Fred had purchased some new cables.

Bernie and I study the problematic issue at Spruce.
We have determined there is a 'vertical kink' in the rails here.

We may have to replace the two right hand turnouts with the number six's you see placed atop the tracks.

But a big job like that will be for another WDWD!

Doug continues around to the west side of the dispatch hut.

Doug then asked me to paint the gables up top using the stepladder.

There I am - being 'spotted' by Doug.

Next Workday Wednesday Doug will paint a second coat of the boxcar red tone then it will be on to the white trim which will make all of the details really 'pop'!

Some of the assembled lads post for a photo.

Then we get a bit goofy!

Chris & I lend a hand over in 'The Pond'.

The work can get rather tricky.

Power tools come in handy!

Jeff has recently joined our OVGRS family and he is already a WDWD helper!

Because of the painting and the trackwork we didn't have time to get to the raking of the fallen tree needles so Jeff gets right down to work.

Jeff conducts some weeding of the 'right of way'.

Bernie takes a break at the head table!

Now, here's a cool looking children's book on Trains.

It sure looks familiar to these old eyes of mine!

This has got to be from the 50's...or even earlier!

Love it!

The back pages.

We have oiled the choke cables.

Pat just arrived to drive Fred to 'The History Circle' luncheon.

Yet another interloper reaches base!
Who could it be?

Holy Batman!!!  It's Robin!!!

A trio of train buffs!

And...a duo of train comedians!

A grey coloured military Airbus A330 was doing 'take-offs & landings' as we were working away.

A330 video tape.

On behalf of Father Fred, thanks for checking in on our Workday Wednesday wonderings.
The trains would not be able to run as well as they do if it weren't for these weekly maintenance sessions.
We'll catch up with many of you this coming Saturday at our next ops session!
We are the WDWD Crew of the OVGRS in Canada's Capital City
