Pictures and Videos From the Handiwork of Dilip
Dilip was kind enough to snap some pics and vids today for the group.
We managed to make it through the heat of the morning even with the early start.
This was Session #10 on the season.
Pat assisted Henk in Nelson Yard on this day.
Fred acted as the chief railfan and bottle washer!
Doug & I were able to escape the dispatch booth and run 304 out from Glen Hammond.
We thank Bill for taking over the dispatching duties to allow us to do so.
In this image we are now aboard our second trick of the day running west from Craig Leigh to Nelson Yard aboard Train 313.
Bernie chats with George up in Firgrove after arriving with westbound 303.
He will depart the yard aboard eastbound 314 in short order.
Fred gets a visit from a neighbour, Allan, who was extremely impressed with the setup in the backyard!
It's the "Kingston Trio" about to sing a tune...
...or perhaps... "The Father, Son & the Goalie Post" - a hockey joke that is!
Oops...Fallentree Mine has now lived up to its name for a second time.
I have tears in my eyes seeing the gorgeous dwarf Spruce now gone! 😥
Bill shuffles out from the dispatch hut to check in on the action in the great outdoors.
Henk finds relief in the shade as Pat assists with all of the movements in the big yard.
Bernie offers up a speech at the beginning of the session.
The lads listen intently.
While some folks wanted to eliminate the safety briefing in order to get the train more quickly, a number of us felt it most important to keep safety "top of mind" in the pre-ops briefing and I'm glad to see that it is back in.
Especially if we have visitors, it is important to let them know of the various safety precautions they should take while navigating the property with its differing levels of terrain.
I used to give the briefing as per Fred's wishes over the past few years, but I've asked Bernie to do so in the future.
Alas...Bernie suggested that one of us cover the briefing for the narrow gauge session while the other takes it on for the standard gauge operations...which will probably be the case...and it will only take a minute to cover the safety rules.
Mark & Jeff find themselves down in Rat Portage with RP&M 73, the run up to Stuart.
The train will then lift cars off the interchange track at Bell and return as RP&M 74.
Henk has had enough of the sun.
Does our dispatcher have a foggy head or is it just Dilip's camera!
Doug and I are now on our third trick of the morning up in Cedar Rock.
We predetermined our moves back down in Peter's Pond as there is no runaround capability at the end of the Cedar Rock Branch.
These next few images are 'snippets' taken from Dilip's upcoming video.
Dilip managed to capture the great amount of activity which can be found in Ironwood at pretty much any time of the day.
Here we have John hauling ore MT's into Ironwood where four cars will be returned to the mine as Al looks on.
Al would later join John as crewmate aboard the ore train.
Meanwhile, Doug & I are occupied at the western end of town with setouts and lifts.
"I Want You For the IPP&W!" Bernie points out in a pose reminiscent of the "Join the Armed Forces" poster.
John is the first to sign up!
Dilip's video views from in and around Ironwood.
Malcolm mimics Bernie, "I Want You For the RP&M!"
He & Moe are on final approach to Peter's Pond aboard second trick Train 311.
At the other end of the Pond, we find second trick Train 314 arriving town.
Peter's Pond video effort from Dilip.
We check back in with Mark & Jeff down in Rat Portage.
Short Rat Portage video.
Henk is wondering when the shade from the umbrella will cool him down as Pat keeps his sights on the action in the yard.
There seems to be a posse of operators wondering what will happen next at the western throat of the yard.
Train 73 reaches Bell on Track 4 where the crew will deposit cars in the town of Stuart.
They will then turn their locomotive before heading over to the interchange track to pick up cars for the return train, Number 74.
Fred sits in the lee of the freshly painted cabin as the two Bills fulfill the role as dispatchers on the day.
Nelson Yard video.
Thanks so much, Dilip, for these great pics and videos!
Here is a Nelson Yard video find as captured by Mike - taken the week before.
I'll now share a small handful of pics I snapped from the session to add to Dilip's collection.
Here we see our newest member of the OVGRS, Al in conversation with Moe.
It was great to see Steve come on out to join us which brought a smile to Marcel's face!
There was quite a great deal of confusion at the start of the day as the paperwork did not match the car availability.
The crew did not let this deter them as they quickly got down to business dealing with every single car on the list one at a time.
In fact, the session was ready to run by our pre-determined time of 9:00 AM.
That's one heckuva lot of teamwork going on!
Indeed, diesel rules the realm on this day as the crew aboard 304 begin their work in Glen Hammond.
Doug & I ran 304 and that's my handsomely weathered CN RS3!
Chris Lyon did a brilliant weathering job on the diesel which was custom painted and lettered by none other than our very own Bill Scobie!
Train 313 and the ore train vie for position as both crews 'want out' from Ironwood.
All the yards are quite active at the moment.
304 picks up speed out from Glen Hammond.
304's departure as seen on video.
304 reaches Ironwood at the precise time that...
...301 does!
Video of the two crews working together and around each other at Ironwood.
John is all smiles!
Who wouldn't be when you are running a long string of cars in a unit train!
That's a total of 15 ore cars plus power and end car!
Ore meets 313 in St. Helens!
Ore stars in this video!
Pool Train 33 drifts down Clarke Grade.
The headend has reached the pedestrian walkway just past the canyon.
Pool Train video fun!
Hey! My D&H GP38-2 has gone "bipolar" on me!
Yikes!
Thanks to Dilip for sending along the bulk of the images for this entry along with some great video work.
As for me...my band enjoyed two gigs this past week.
Here we are conducting our 'sound check' at a "Book Launch" on a farm in Vars.
And...here are all of my ardent fans...
...and groupies!
Indeed, they are all music lovers!
Hey...what's this! Something new for the railway!
We thank our dear friends at HOTRAK for the gift of this dolly for our ore bins!
Much appreciated!
And...as we always do each week...we offer up a great big note of "Thanks" to Fred for being the most amazing host any group could have.
We truly appreciate all that you do for us, Fred!
The joy you bring to this fine hobby of ours helps spread the enthusiasm for train operations in a huge way!
