Mike's Band Plays Fred's Patio Party
This past week we had OVGRS member, Pete Conroy in town.
Pete hails from Wolfville, Nova Scotia.
He is a seasoned saxophone player who adds a deeper dimension to Mike's band, 'The Mystics' whenever he arrives town.
I would like to thank Joan, Malcolm & Bernie for sending along these fun pictures from the performance!
It is for this reason that Fred & I organize our annual "Patio Party" in the crew lounge in Fred's backyard.
Here we see Pete wailing away on his tenor sax while the baritone brother awaits its crew call for the next song on the set list.
Our set list included:
Pretty Woman - Roy Orbison
I'm a Believer - The Monkees
Fly Me to the Moon - Frank Sinatra
Secret Agent Man - Johnny Rivers
Nights in White Satin - The Moody Blues
Band members from left to right include:
Corinne Friessen on lead vocals
Pete Conroy on saxophone
Mark Peters on drums and lead vocals
Mike Hamer on electric lead guitar
Gerry Berrigan on acoustic rhythm guitar
Alec Olaveson - bass guitar (out of the image to the right - you'll see him later)
I have to say that Mark on drums is also an amazing rhythm guitarist and Gerry on acoustic rhythm guitar is also an amazing electric lead guitarist.
Our set list also included:
All I Have to do is Dream - The Everly Brothers
Under the Boardwalk - The Drifters
Stormy - The Classics IV
Moondance - Van Morrison
Dreams - Fleetwood Mac
Corinne has already won an Emmy Award and a couple of years ago while she was living in White Rock, BC just south of the city of Vancouver she was voted as top female singer in Vancouver for that year!
More songs from our set list were:
These Boots Are Made For Walking - Nancy Sinatra
There's a Kind of Hush - Herman's Hermits

I leave the singing to Corinne & Mark but I did sing one number - I Shall Be Released by Bob Dylan.
More from our setlist:
Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying - Jerry & the Pacemakers
Twist and Shout - The Beatles
La Bamba - Ritchie Valens
Spooky - The Classics IV
Summertime - George Gershwin
The patio area where the pond (named after Fred's brother) Peter used to be located was the stage area for the band with the 20 or so audience members sitting under the canopy of the crew lounge and extending out and around the lounge area.
That's Alec on bass in the blue shirt at the front of the stage.
Still more tunes from the set list:
Get Together - The Youngbloods
Black Magic Woman - Santana
Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay - Otis Redding
Stand By Me - Ben E. King
Groovin' - The Rascals
It was a lovely evening out back of Fred's place!
We didn't get through all of the numbers in the set list as we played from 6:30 - 9:30 and we didn't want to keep the neighbour's children awake for too long!
More from the set list:
Love Song - The Cure
Proud Mary - Tina Turner
The Boxer - Simon & Garfunkel
Oh Boy - Buddy Holly
Bus Stop - The Hollies
We had an appreciative audience who sang along to the tunes and waved their lit iPhones on some and there were even a couple of dancers in the crowd...all things a band appreciates.
Continued set list listing:
Snowbird - Anne Murray
What a Wonderful World - Louis Armstrong
Yes I Can - Valdy
Yellow - Coldplay
A Hard Day's Night - The Beatles
Steve sang a beautiful song quite relevant to what the firefighters have been experiencing in recent summers.
The selection Steve sang was 'Cold Missouri Waters' by James Keelaghan.
Still more songs from the band's set list:
Bird on a Wire - Leonard Cohen
Mellow Yellow - Donovan
Ferry Cross the Mersey - Gerry & the Pacemakers
Georgia on My Mind - Ray Charles
I Know How to Lose You - John Hiatt
These next set of pictures came my way in a smaller format.
Here we are while the daylight was still very much with us.
The set list continued:
House of the Rising Sun - The Animals
Ruby Tuesday - The Rolling Stones
Just a Song Before I Go - Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
Imagine - John Lennon

Folks brought out lots of yummy treats for the crew lounge table.
Father Fred has some tasty 'leftovers'!
Set list continued:
Feeling Groovy - Simon & Garfunkel
Sweet Caroline - Neil Diamond
American Pie - Don McLean
Dead Flowers - The Rolling Stones
Rhiannon - Fleetwood Mac
Corinne is all smiles whenever she has a mic in her hand!
We had a wonderful audience of some twenty or so folks throughout the evening.
Joan came along with her lovely sister!
And...Father Fred was a very happy camper!
Thanks for checking in on our wonderful evening at Fred's.
This is an annual event that takes place whenever Pete is in town from Nova Scotia.
We are the OVGRS Music Lovers here in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
