Further Views From Session #8
We thank Dilip & Pat for their "picture and video" contributions taken during Session #8.
Our even numbered session this season are of the standard gauge variety.
Diesels roamed the kingdom on a beautiful northern Saturday morning!
Delaware & Hudson unit #7316 will roll along RP&M rails on this fine day.
With their consist coupled on to the headpin the crew is ready to roll out from the yard with a destination of Bell and Stuart with stops in Anderson and Rat Portage.
The car hanging out on its side will most likely visit the RIP track under the surveillance of Father Fred.
Just birthed from its box, CN Geep 1701 will handle yard duties today.
This CP beauty awaits its marching orders in Firgrove.
The passenger train on the far track will be 'first out' followed by this train (302) and shortly thereafter, the ore train.
Ralph Yard is filling with traffic in the early hours of the morning.
A CN along with a CP boxcar resides on the Hamer Manufacturing siding deep down in Rat Portage.
Now here is an interesting looking rail joiner holding rail together near the throat area of Ralph Yard!
Henk's 45-tonner brightens the mood with its sunny disposition while hanging out in Nelson Yard.
The crowd gathers once the cars are all in place.
The crew gathers in the lounge for the pre-ops briefing.
With the extreme weather this summer has presented, the goal for the group is to keep the pre-ops meeting as brief as possible in order to get the train session underway asap.
We are already starting an hour earlier to help escape from some of the early afternoon heat that tends to build.
And...getting trains underway is what we do best!
This particular CN Geep is a real performer - putting on a show for the railfans as it crests the plateau at Lilly.
Eric looks on as Jonah guides 301 through the latticework of the Fred Mills Trestle at Goodie's Gulch (the dry roadbed named after our WDWD friend, Bernie Goodman!).
At a later time in the morning we video 301's progress near the end of its journey as the crew takes on the 180 degree turn at Lilly.
We continue to fast forward where this railfan finds himself photographing four locomotives in a very busy Firgrove.
Yardmaster Len has set the turnouts allowing for 'second trick' Train 314 to escape Firgrove as the crew begins their eastbound journey.

We catch up with RP&M Train, Rat 61, in Rat Portage.
The crew is switching out the southeastern end of town.

Len & I chat as the Firgrove yard switcher breaks down a train that has just come in off IPP&W rails.
The CN endcab toils away seemingly effortlessly around these environs.

The van has cleared the gap as the crew continues to gain speed out from Nelson Yard.

...because he gets to crew with skipper Marcel aboard their second trick run of the morning, Train 313.
This cheerful looking reefer was found at the ice house in Craig Leigh!
A twin brother is found down in St. Helens.
Third trick Train 322 reaches the western (geographical eastern) yard limits down in Peter's Pond.
Second Trick Train 314 is about to depart "The Pond" to free up space for the crew aboard 313.
The two trains converge, yet keep safely out of each other's way.
Father & Son work the town as a well-oiled team!
With Eric heading over to Cedar Rock and Claire & Pat in the scene, this must mean one thing...
...the ore train of MT's must be on the roll!
A short time earlier...
...ore was being deposited at the Northland Ore Dock...
...located in Craig Leigh.
In the video you will see the caboose going in on the ore dock track.
Pat & Claire soon realized that they would be better off placing the van on a separate track beside the engine house in order to retrieve it easily when departing with the empties.
Wayfreight 313's power out from Craig Leigh is this CN switcher engine.
The crew has been granted clearance out from Douglas Yard and are now turning their wheels heading south and then west.
The crew held at the light until receiving their green before proceeding down the hill to St. Helens.
Here is the power on the ore train for today's run.
No worries about that stranded buggy!It will gain its freedom in a short while.
In the meantime. Pool Train 33 begins its long journey across both railroads.

Train 33 shuttles passengers and some headend freight out from Craig Leigh.
The crew will traverse both rail lines on their shift.

Train 314 is well along on its journey to Nelson Yard with a stop at Peter's Pond in the offing.
At the same time Train 313 has found Ironwood to its liking with no other crews in the way!
While...over in Spruce, the crew aboard 312 deals with cars on the trailing sidings located there.

Father Fred sat down with me recently when I interviewed him around the topic of name origins on the railroad.Seeing as we just looked at a video that covered a few places including Ironwood, it was time to make that the topic of our discussion.
Indeed, Fred discusses the origin of the name Ironwood in this video release.
We find 311 switching out the lower Pond area as 314 arrives town.
Train 314 will shuffle up the Cedar Rock Branch while 311 will soon depart town for points west.
313 takes the curve leading into Spruce.
312 held in the siding for the meet with 313 and proceeds to Ironwood with clearance granted by dispatch.

Cedar Rock plays host to a variety of traffic on this day.
Bernie created the ledge for the depot at St. Helens offering up sufficient space for the station platform to extend along both sides of the structure.
The lads hang out in the patio lounge area as Phil offers up some tales.
Bill and Dilip relax in the shade offered by the overhanging branches.
You will recall in an earlier blog entry I shared this image my friend Mark sent me.
Here is the depot at Kensington on Prince Edward Island.
It has been converted into a restaurant.

Phil, as mentioned earlier, became the new owner of a large scale CP diesel locomotive.
