The Layout Plan for Spruce
Lawrence, Fred, Bernie and I braved the heat and humidity to work some more at Spruce today. The image above showcases Lawrence's sketch for us of the plan for Spruce.
(Remember, you can enlarge the photo by clicking on it.)
A closer view shows how things will appear when done.
The brown arrow points to the mainline which hugs the stone wall.
The orange arrow indicates the passing siding.
The bright red and black arrows where the old Spruce Spur siding used to reside showcase an industry (black arrow) which will hold two or three cars. The bright red arrow shows how there will still be enough room on this spur to act as a lead going into the tracks in the opposite direction.
The burgundy arrow shows the two sidings for Mackenzie Lumber that existed before. These sidings have been moved closer to the aisle for ease of switching.
The light green arrow showcases a "holdover" track to place cars momentarily when switching out the town...similar to the center track at Mount St. Helens.
Finally, the star indicates the location of the Spruce Depot which will look great on the curve!
Bernie is taking this piece of wood home. He will use it for his carrying case. It is the perfect width for between the wheels of his locomotive. By using this wooden section he will not have to create grooves in the carrying case. A brilliant idea!
Lawrence and Fred enjoy some respite from all of their hard work.
Malcolm sent along these next two pictures he had taken the night before while visiting Fred.
Fred has the turnouts laid in place in order to offer up a "visual" as to how things will proceed.
Things are progressing.
Fred checks out the job.
As does Bernie.
The turnout in the lower part of the picture is a wye. It will be required for proper alignment of the tracks going through Spruce.
It's a hot day...
...so some rest in the shade is required between work assignments.
Lawrence enjoys the shade as well.
Then it's back to work.
Track is being fiddled with.
That wye switch.
Fred directs us to the location of a specific tool.
Teamwork...
...and camaraderie...
...help make the task easier...
...and the time passes by quicker!
Tools of the trade.
Bernie checks the alignment and level of the board.
More gravel and earth must be moved.
We take turns...
...as it is a dusty and dirty job.
...but it's fun to contribute in any way you can.
Check in on the weekend for further progress...weather permitting!
All the best, Mike Hamer, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
